Transforming the Boston Seaport

Boston Seaport | Real Estate For Sale

Currently the hottest place in Boston, the Boston Seaport District wasn’t always so popular. From mud to docks to innovation, the Boston Seaport District has transformed into the place to live, work and play. Where once ships only docked to unload fish, now restaurants, hotels, and businesses flourish. With its amazing waterfront views, the newest Boston luxury condos Pier 4 will debut in 2018, providing the revitalized area with much needed upscale housing.

Boston Seaport’s Humble Beginnings

In the 1800s the Boston Seaport was known as the Commonwealth Flats. Owned by the commonwealth of Massachusetts, it was a tidal marsh or large wetland area continually inundated with water. To create more space for a growing population and accommodate the shipping trade, the tidal marshes were filled by leveling hills turning the marshes into muddy patches where industrial wharves, railroad yards and warehouses were constructed. For years, the Boston Seaport served as the place for ships to unload fish.

A Slow Transformation

Though the Boston Seaport didn’t look like much, there were those that saw its potential. Despite the concrete jungle of parking lots, warehouses and railroad yards, the amazing waterfront views allowed for a vision of what the Boston Seaport could be. Among those that saw the area’s possibilities was Anthony Athanas who opened Anthony’s Pier 4 in 1963 in the Boston Seaport District. His restaurant became the highest grossing restaurant in the United States and was popular for its delicious food and stunning waterfront view. More revitalization took place in the 90s when the federal courthouse, the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse, moved to the area and construction began on the Big Dig, and the Seaport became much more accessible by highway and public transportation.

Revitalization Continues with Major Attractions

In time, a multitude of restaurants, hotels and major attractions moved into the Seaport District increasing the area’s popularity. Attractions include:

  • Boston Convention and Exhibition Center
  • Seaport Hotel
  • Seaport World Trade Center
  • Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA)

Innovation on the Waterfront

Most recently, Boston’s previous Mayor Thomas Menino dubbed the Seaport District the Innovation District and called for the expansion and transformation of the area. His initiative helped inspire widespread growth in the area. New restaurants, buildings and mixed use projects are popping up in the area at an amazing rate. With the many exciting businesses setting up on the South Boston Waterfront, the area has also grown in popularity. Businesses are not just setting up shop; businesses are booming in the area.
